What is Anxiety Disorder

Since the evolution of humanity, there is a feeling present inside humans, which occurs in some specific situations, those specific situations, in which our body orders us to fight or flight, either face or run away, an “adrenaline rush” occurs in our body, which leads to certain behavioural and body changes like, sweating, raised heartbeats or alertness or increased sensitivity towards the surroundings. However, the feeling of anxiety is not only very normal but also can be termed as important for our survival.

Anxiety Meaning

Anxiety is basically a feeling of worry or tension, about the upcoming or future events, which usually occurs within everyone.

We all have that question that is anxiety a mental illness so yes, anxiety as normal feelings shapes into a disorder when found excessively in a person. Triggering the mental as well as physical health.

Anxiety becomes a disorder as it leads to nervousness, fear, tensions or worrying.

Anxiety Definition

According to APA (American Psychological  Association)  ” Anxiety is an emotion characterised by the feeling of tension, worried thoughts, and physical changes like increased blood pressure. ”

Modernization has lead the anxiety to revolve around issues like work, money, relations, health, life and some other issues, which are taken seriously by an individual.  With no requirement of fight or flee anymore. But it is still important for our survival, for eg to avoid accidental circumstances we take preventive measures.

Anxiety Disorder

Anxiety disorder is a group of psychological illness or issues which creates difficulties in leading a normal life, it has several symptoms and requires treatment in the form of counselling, or pills at times. It can vary in its depth and severity or intensity and are of different types, affecting our various emotions and triggers them accordingly, that may or may not at times cause physical harm.  The distress can hinder you from leading a normal life at times.

Anxiety Symptoms

There are  different symptoms present in different individuals going through anxiety,   anxiety symptoms  are huge in number for anxiety, anxiety attack , and anxiety disorders including GAD (generalised anxiety disorder), SAD (Social Anxiety Disorder), Phobias, PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) to name a few the most common ones  that are associated with anxiety disorder are numbness,  pain in chest, headaches, neck tension, shortness of breath,  dizziness,  weakness in legs, palpitations,  burning skin, upset stomach, pulsing in ears, tingling, sleep problems, inability to rest or restlessness, feeling like you are going crazy. Feeling of electric shock,  Nausea etc.

There is a long list of symptoms which can be found in individuals suffering from anxiety.  These were some we could compile here.

Types of anxiety disorders.

Anxiety Disorder is a large term which may further be subdivided into its various types for clear and better understanding.

There is not just one but different types of anxiety disorders which affects the human body.

Some of those disorders that comes under this terms are,

  • Social Anxiety Order.

Also be termed as Social Phobia, where the individual is self-conscious about himself and is worried about everyday social conditions or situations.  We have a fear of being embarrassed in public. It may include stage fear, fear of forming intimate relationships, or fear of being humiliated or embarrassed by someone.

  • GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder) 

This disorder includes worries and tensions about non-specific events of life,  it is a long-lasting anxiety and is the most common type of a disorder. People with GAD are usually not able to understand their cause of anxiety.

  • Phobias 

Phobia is nothing but irrational fear that tend to avoid facing some specific objects or situations.  They are a bit different from disorders of anxiety as they are present because of a cause. The fear may be not required or unnecessary and irrational yet the person going through it is unable to control his fear and anxiety when falls a prey to that situation a phobia may be of varied things, ranging from animals to objects to situations.

  • OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)

In this disorder, there is an occurrence of a string of uncontrollable recurring thoughts or actions that are disturbing, intrusive and negative.  The victims usually know, the thoughts are unnecessary and not rational or without any reason but they moreover tend to alleviate their anxiety.  The prey to this anxiety may constantly wash their hands or check lights and stoves.

  • Separation Anxiety Disorder

This disorder deals with a feeling of anxiety or insecurity when separated from a person or a place where the person feels secure and safe.  It is considered as a disorder when the feeling is excessive or not appropriate after separation.  Though Separation sometimes may result into panic symptoms.

  • PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder)

This disorder occurs after going through a previous trauma like military combat, a serious accident, physical abuse, sexual assault or anything that a person is not able to take and accept easily.  It often leads to flashbacks and some behaviour change may be noticed in the person to avoid triggers.
